Overview

The VIRGINIA Aft End Integration, Propulsion Plant and Shielding department (D412) is looking for an independent, communicative candidate to operate at the Huntington Ingalls Industries, Newport News Shipbuilding facility. The candidate will provide technical deck plate oversight for aft end structures, arrangements, and shielding construction activities for VIRGINIA Class Submarine propulsion plants. This position focuses on nuclear work associated with the construction of the Primary Shield Tank, Reactor Compartment deck and attached components, but it includes non-nuclear work.

The engineer will reside in an office environment but will routinely operate within the production environment. Work is primarily during 1st shift; however, 2nd or 3rd shift support may be occasionally required based on construction needs. Travel to Electric Boat Groton or offsite locations occasionally required.

The successful candidate will be the lead structural engineer for all VIRGINIA Class nuclear work in the Newport News Shipyard. The candidate is responsible for facilitating production quality and rate by interfacing with designers, shipyard workers, other engineering departments, and the U.S. Navy.

Primary responsibilities for position include:

  • Identifying, evaluating, and resolving construction liabilities requiring design yard approval, primarily for Reactor Plant construction including the Primary Shield Tank and Reactor Compartment deck and attached components.
  • Surveillance & construction oversight
  • Identifying and facilitating process improvements including design or construction sequence changes

Required Physical Qualifications:

  • Climbing, crawling, working within confined spaces, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, twisting, standing for extended periods both inside and outside environments.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree, or higher, in an Structural Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Physics, or related engineering field.
  • 0-5 years of post-graduate engineering experience

Preferred:

  • 1+ years of post-graduate engineering experience
  • Construction, manufacturing, shipbuilding experience
  • Knowledge of weld joint design, Welding, Metrology, Machining or Quality
  • Siemens NX/Team Center, Catia, or engineering drawing/blueprints experience
