Overview

The Industrial Engineering Organization provides mission-critical support to EB leadership and the functional organizations by developing and managing the organization's improvement strategies, executing improvement initiatives, mentoring and supporting employees in executing improvements, and measuring the impact of an organization's improvement activities.

The Industrial Engineer supports 3 main areas of focus:

  1. Support Work Center design (defining the location that a series of work activities are performed and all the equipment, tooling, fixtures and personnel required) for Columbia construction.The Industrial Engineer will partner with Operations, Ships Management and Planning to create standard, repeatable plans for each Work Center.

Responsibilities include:

  • Partner with Design Build, Operations and Ships Management to optimize the build plan and effectively determine what essentials need to be incorporated into the Work Centers to identify improvements in the construction flow, layout, facilities, and Trade specific levels
  • Facilitate creation of Work Center playbooks by coordinating with applicable Trades and Operations Leadership
  • Partner with Detail Planning and Advance Planning for constant refinement of work scopes at the key event, activity and work order levels
  • Socialize with multiple organizations throughout Work Center design and development
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement at Electric Boat
  1. Support Work Center execution for Columbia construction. The Industrial Engineer will partner with Operations, Ships Management and Planning to ensure successful completion of work within the Work Center.

Responsibilities include:

  • Partner with Design Build, Operations and Ships Management during execution of the Work Center to identify progress via applicable metrics, capability v. capacity analysis, group code tracking and addressing, etc., with the intention of successful on-time and on-cost completion of the Work Center.
  • Facilitate implementation of Work Center playbooks by coordinating with applicable Trades and Operations Leadership
  • Play an active role in creating standard repeatable and predictable processes within the Work Center
  • Partner with Detail Planning and Advance Planning for constant refinement of work scopes at the key event, activity and work order levels
  • Socialize with multiple organizations throughout Work Center execution and development, including participation in future Work Center design
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement at Electric Boat
  1. Responsible for the application of Lean Manufacturing and / or Lean Six Sigma principles to investigate, analyze and facilitate process change directly resulting in reduced costs and lead times within the manufacturing and outfitting areas in the Groton Shipyard.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist organizations to identify, plan, and implement high impact Process Improvements and Lean Six Sigma Projects and ensure they align with company objectives
  • Lead teams on projects to improve safety and quality, reducing cost, and improving schedule performance
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement in the organization
  • Work with leadership and employees on applying Lean and Six Sigma approaches to help achieve process excellence
  • Provide mentorship to employees when leading change
  • Identify and eliminate the barriers that prevent successful attainment of companys improvement goals

Selected candidate will demonstrate strong project management skills and the ability to work under minimal supervision and in a team environment. Candidate will assist with mentoring junior employees. Candidate must be able to handle working on multiple projects. Candidate must be capable of combining assertive initiative with professional discipline to accomplish challenging tasks, and work as Change Agents to remove barriers that hinder change.

The selected applicants will receive training and certification in Lean and Six Sigma in support of improving Electric Boats business processes.

This position is located in Groton, CT. Selected candidates will be expected to work Monday through Friday on-site.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelors of Science (or Higher) Degree in Engineering
  • 4+ years of experience working in a manufacturing, production environment OR construction site on the production floor
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office, specifically Excel
  • Lean Manufacturing and / or Lean Six Sigma Black / Green Belt Training
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance

Preferred:

  • BS in Industrial Engineering
  • Experience with Lean, Kaizen, or Toyota Production Systems
  • Experience with project budgeting, cost estimating and scheduling
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as welding & machining
  • Knowledge or experience performing mechanical, fluid, electrical testing
