About The Department

D471 Commissioned Ship Propulsion Plant Mechanical Engineering supports mission readiness of LOS ANGELES, OHIO, SEAWOLF, and VIRGINIA Class commissioned submarines by providing engineering technical support for modernization and maintenance of the reactor plant. RPPY engineers also provide engineering support for Naval Nuclear Power Training Units, which include the Moored Training Ships and the S8G Prototype.

About This Group

D471 Component Engineering provides technical support and problem resolution to the US Navy for all commissioned classes of submarine, directly supports the maintenance and modernization of active-duty vessels. The Component Engineering group is team focused, with a priority placed on the training of new engineers through both structured learning and a robust mentorship program. The work offers variety, opportunity, and unique insights into the submarine life cycle and mission.

Role Overview

This position requires the ability to resolve a wide variety of technical challenges, directly supporting day to day operation and maintenance of the commissioned fleet. These challenges are limited in scope, but provide direct benefit to the fleet. In addition to these shorter term tasks, an engineer in this position will also have the opportunity to act as the engineer on tasks to support fleet modernization and increased capability. Engineers oversee all aspects of the tasks, including funding approval, ship check visits, overall technical quality, maintaining schedules, awareness of budgets, and interfacing with other engineering and design disciplines.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in mechanical, marine, materials, aerospace engineering, or equivalent.
  • 0-5 years of engineering experience post graduation
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DOD) Secret clearance as a condition of employment.

Preferred:

  • Masters degree in mechanical, marine, materials, aerospace engineering
  • Experience with project management, obsolescence management, or planning
  • Technical writing experience
  • U.S. Navy experience
