Job Description:

GDIT is providing an opportunity for interns with familiarity of broad data science concepts to support our efforts with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of Advanced Molecular Detection (OAMD) and the agency's efforts to modernize surveillance and diagnostics. In this role, you will focus on a project designed to add value to the existing Scientific Computing and Bioinformatics Support (SCBS) contract at the CDC. You will be a member of a diverse, talented and highly collaborative team of bioinformatics scientists, engineers, and system administrators in Atlanta. Each intern selected for the program will have an opportunity to select a project and will be assigned an SCBS team member as a mentor or coach. Each intern will be required to present a final seminar to OAMD and to any academic mentor or collaborator that the intern would like to invite. In addition to the presentation, the intern will be required to assemble a package that consists of scripts, documentation, and any other project-specific artifacts.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
  • Create detailed documentation for an open source bioinformatics tool. The specific tool can be chosen from a list that the team internally develops or if the intern has expertise or knowledge of a tool that will benefit CDC users
  • Develop a training or a seminar for the open source tool. The training can be a short training (2 to 4 hours) and seminar (1 to 2 hours). Training materials should include:
    • Agenda
    • Slides
    • Lab handouts (includes scripts with readme for the users to follow along)
    • Lab developed in JupyterHub
    • Notifications
  • Develop a step by step guide (in word and pdf) on how to use the software
  • Write a generic script that any CDC user can use and manipulate to cater to their dataset along with some sample data
  • Deliver the training course, which includes:
    • Dry run - At least 2 dry runs with the O&M team & 1 with the all team members
    • Delivery of one training or seminar


Education:
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate college degree program with 2+ years completed
  • Degree program must be in bioinformatics, computer science, or a related scientific field

Requirements
  • Knowledge in bioinformatics and computer science
  • Experience with the use of bioinformatics tools in a Linux environment
  • Experience with high-level scripting languages such as Python
  • Experience with presenting or creating documentation
