Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree.

Department of Defense Secret security clearance is preferred at time of hire. Candidates must be able to obtain a Secret clearance within a reasonable amount of time from date of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities for this Position

Position Description

General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Composite Tooling Engineer. This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation's core defense/intelligence services and systems. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:

  • Provide full program lifecycle tooling support including concept development, design, fabrication, inspection/acceptance, repair, and maintenance
  • Lead tooling projects to ensure that tooling meets industry standards and customer requirements.
  • Plan and execute tooling projects from conceptual design to production within defined budget and schedule
  • Participate in detailed design activity/reviews and provide recommendations for tooling approaches by interfacing with CAD designers
  • Perform Make vs. Buy evaluations for tooling including preparation of statements of work. Coordinate/interface with vendors to ensure that requirements are fully communicated and understood.
  • For in-house fabricated tooling, select and purchase the required materials and provide direction to tool shop personnel during tool manufacture
  • Plan and implement tool inspection plans for new tools and periodic cycle inspection
  • Prepare cost estimates and lead times for tooling to support proposal efforts
  • Actively identify technical risks and ensure they are addressed in risk mitigation plans
  • Participate in development of program strategies and teaming strategies as they relate to the assigned task
  • Travel will be required (infrequent to 10%)



SPECIFIC DUTIES AND TASKS:

  • Maintain legacy system production tooling
  • Develop and implement tooling that is ergonomic, robust and meets customer needs
  • Develop and implement modifications and improvements to existing tool strings
  • Assist with proposal development from initial design to production implementation
  • Provide expertise in addressing tooling issues when production problems arise
  • Develop tool use instructions and inspection plans


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and experience in composite tool design and fabrication including lamination molds, trim/drill fixtures, machining fixtures, and assembly jigs
  • Solid understanding of tooling materials and applications using metals, composites, and additive manufacturing approaches
  • Understanding of tolerances, thermal expansion, cure shrinkage, spring-back and other factors influencing tool design and performance
  • Ability to develop tooling concepts, models, drawings, and specifications
  • Experience in molding composites in applications including autoclave and out-of-autoclave processes
  • Ability to assist in tooling installation and set-up for production
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings including in-depth knowledge of GD&T and how to apply to tool designs
  • Ability to evaluate manufacturing and tooling problems and to implement effective corrective actions
  • Proficient in MS Office applications - Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including ability to prepare and present technical briefings to senior management and customers


PREFERRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Experience in manufacture of composite aircraft parts and assemblies
  • Experience in implementing new processes, documentation, quality/process controls, and operator training
  • CAD experience (Catia V5 preferred), Verisurf
